<image:caption>Explaining Life Through Evolution - U.S. Edition paperback 2023 from MIT PRESS “Chakrabarty gives a well-informed account that should refresh the knowledge of curious readers and convince those with open minds... this book is a superb gift for a teenager fascinated by science but frustrated at the careful, abbreviated approach to evolution they are likely to encounter in high school biology class.” – Kirkus Reviews “Prosanta Chakrabarty's Explaining Life Through Evolution is a lucid and often entertaining exploration of the living world, in all its colorful permutations. He aims not to indoctrinate, but rather to explain, even for skeptical readers, just what evolution is, and how it works. Highly recommended.” —Richard Conniff, author of Ending Epidemics and The Species Seekers “An enlightening and entertaining climb through the tree of life. Prosanta Chakrabarty is a superb educator who wants more than anything to persuade you to think. He offers an accessible and affable guide to evolution, what it is, what it isn’t, how it works and why it matters — especially right now. Essential reading for students, teachers and anyone who’s ever wondered how life on earth came to be the way it is.” —Helen Scales, author of Spirals in Time and The Brilliant Abyss “A good book for people who want straight answers to tough questions about evolution.” –Mary Jane West-Eberhard, author of Developmental Plasticity and Evolution; 2021 recipient of the Linnean Medal “This incredibly readable and engaging primer on evolutionary principles and processes is a ‘must have’ for any reader's bookshelf. I enjoyed not only the elaboration of how evolution works but also the sections on misconceptions and applications. It even clarifies important timely topics like race as a social rather than genetic construct and our current COVID-19 pandemic.” —Mohamed Noor, Darwin-Wallace Medal winner; Dean of Natural Sciences, Duke University “Chakrabarty weaves his lived experiences into this poignant discussion of evolution, covering key concepts that are vital to our understanding of current conditions like mutation and natural selection. Important for any book on evolutionary biology is discussion of how the discipline has been (too often) misused to conflate socially constructed categories like gender, and here Chakrabarty's incandescent analysis shines light on the problems with historical and present-day interpretations of evolution, while enlightening us about those who work at the cutting edges of the field. We need this book, to guide us through viral pandemics and social change, and to provide literacy so that we can work together toward a thriving future world." —Jessica Ware, Associate Curator, American Museum of Natural History; winner of the ‘Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers’ “Prosanta Chakrabarty presents one of the most accessible texts about evolution that I have ever read. Whether you are an educator, scientist, or curious reader, this presentation of the theory of evolution provides a magical balance between solid scientific research and humor that teaches, advises, and entertains. As an elementary educator, this text helps me make the theory of evolution accessible to the youngest of scientists and citizens of the world. It also makes scientific research and scientists more human, more accessible rather than reserved pieces of knowledge and beings for a select few to know and understand. I am grateful for this resource as a way to become a better prepared educator and human, charged with empowering our youngest of scientists and leaders of the world.” —Becky Schnekser, elementary educator; explorer; author of Expedition Science: Empowering Learners Through Exploration</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Guide to Academia is a handbook for all those individuals thinking seriously about going to graduate school. Written by an author with extensive experience navigating the academic world, the book explains all the steps and potential bumps in the road that a student might encounter as they take the plunge into academia. Each chapter begins with a section called the "hard truth," which will help students determine if they are on the right path. Starting with an undergraduate student looking for a graduate school, the reader is taken on a journey up the academic ladder through graduate studies, a postdoctoral fellowship and an assistant professorship. Each chapter gives advice on not only how to survive the current stage but how to get to the next stage quickly. Enhanced with material from the author's own job applications and interview presentations, A Guide to Academia provides concrete examples of the tools needed for a successful career in academia.</image:caption>

<image:caption>is the Edwin K. Hunter Chair for Communication in Science Research & Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, and Director & Curator of Fishes at the Museum of Natural Science at Louisiana State University. He is a systematist and an ichthyologist studying the evolution and biogeography of both freshwater and marine fishes. His work includes studies of Neotropical (Central and South America, Caribbean) and Indo-West Pacific (Indian and Western Pacific Ocean) fishes. His natural history collecting efforts include trips to Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Madagascar, Panama, Kuwait, and many other countries. He has described over a dozen new species including several new cavefishes. He is a TED Senior Fellow, an Elected Fellow of AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science), a National Fellow of the Explorers Club, a Fellow of the Linnean Society, a Fulbright Distinguished Chair and a National Geographic Certified Educator. He is the past Faculty Director of the LSU Center for Collaborative Knowledge, Past President of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists and is currently on the Board of Directors for the National Center for Science Education and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS). In 2025 he was named a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar and a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Me - about Me</image:title>
<image:caption>My research explores the evolutionary history of fishes. I am the principle investigator of a lab that does research on biodiversity, biogeography, phylogenomics and taxonomy. I have described 15 new species of fishes from almost as many countries; I've been lucky enough to have worked in more than 35 countries doing natural history research. My lab has included a number of postdocs and graduate students from various backgrounds and countries; building scientific infrastructure in the places I work is an important goal of my research. I've been very privileged to have worked with great colleagues at LSU and elsewhere. I've been a professor in Biological Sciences (teaching Evolution and Ichthyology) and a Curator of Fishes at the Museum of Natural Science at LSU for the last fifteen years. In that time I also served as President for the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (2023), and as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation (2016-2017). I've been honored to be elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2018), and I was recently on sabbatical as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Ottawa. Public science outreach is also an important component of my work. I am a Senior Fellow at TED and a National Geographic Certified Educator; I’ve given many talks and workshops to my academic colleagues and to the general public. My goal in that work is to help more people understand the importance of evolution and natural history research and to expand and diversify the kinds of people interested in doing science.</image:caption>

The wonder of the world's creatures inspired him to study biology, a field that illuminates which of Earth’s beings are related to one another -- and how an event in a single location of this interconnected planet can cause global repercussions. <image:title>Research - My current research interests stem from my desire to understand fundamental aspects of biological diversity. These fundamental aspects include the relationships of organisms and their morphological complexity. I study these aspects using phylogenetic systematics, geometric morphometrics and other tools. These tools allow us to understand broader themes such as historical biogeography, molecular evolution, conservation and the evolution of morphological diversity. As an ichthyologist, my focus is on process oriented evolutionary biology in marine fishes and pattern oriented evolutionary biology in freshwater fishes. As a systematist, I use molecular and morphological tools to help discover relationships among species and resolve taxonomy in order to better understand the evolutionary history of a taxon. My most recent research focuses on understanding the phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships of freshwater fishes from Middle America (Central America, Mexico, Greater Antillean Islands) and on the phylogenetic and evolutionary history of deep-sea fishes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Indo-West Pacific. I am also conducting studies of blind cave fishes of Gondwanan origin and bioluminescent fishes from the deep ocean</image:title>
